“Data backup refers to all procedures and facilities that serve to protect data from loss, errors or changes. This is about the confidentiality of the data (no unauthorized access permitted), its integrity (prevention of unauthorized or accidental changes to the data) and its constant availability (data must not be lost).

Although the damage caused by industrial espionage in Germany alone is estimated at 10 billion euros per year and, according to a survey in 2000, almost 50% of the companies surveyed had a total failure of their computer system due to security breaches lasting between 1 day and 10 days per year Only a third of these companies have their own security budget. Apparently there was still a lack of security awareness at this point in time (2002). The increasing e-business operations and the eavesdropping affair of the NSA (National Security Agency) and the spy software "XKeyscore" that were discovered in 2013 have increased the topicality and importance of the security precautions listed below and have increasingly led to a rethink.

In all companies that operate information management, a comprehensive data backup system must be installed that guarantees the constant availability and reconstructability of the data through regular back-up programs (e.g. outside of working hours)." [1]
